A4Vision’s solution renders 2D images (photos and stored image data) compliant with ISO standards for the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) requirements for new travel documents that incorporate biometrics. A4Vision’s synchronized 2D and 3D capabilities accomplish faster and more precise matching results than when using only a 2D based search. The new capability provides the ability to simultaneously create 3D databases, which are capable highly accurate matching at sub-second speeds. 2D texture and 3D geometry enrollment occur in one quick session with a person standing in the same location. The session produces the ISO 19794-5 compliant 2D image, a high resolution 3D image, and a combined view or overlay of the 2D image matched with the 3D shape. The combination of the 2D and 3D images allows for enhanced viewing of the facial images.
The ISO 19794-5 standard for ICAO MRTD’s required new guidelines to bring a higher level of consistency when performing human and automated biometric matching against large databases or against images stored on the travel documents, such as passports.
There are challenges with 2D systems when attempting to match a person standing at an uncontrolled angle against the full frontal 2D image stored in the travel documents or against random images that comprise watch list databases. Both of these matching scenarios, 1:1 and 1:Many, require precise recognition performance in order to maintain checkpoint flow.
